The village of Al-Mazraa in the Syrian city of Homs is witnessing a state of popular unrest, after the body of the Shiite sheikh, Rasul Shahoud, was found murdered in his car, in an incident that is the first of its kind against a Shiite cleric and one of the most prominent scholars of the sect in the Homs countryside. The sheikh's body was found murdered inside his car, hundreds of meters away from a security checkpoint, hours after he was arrested in the morning by the Public Security Service, before he was allowed to continue on his way to a nearby car wash. According to local accounts, the sheikh was subjected to an armed attack carried out by two people riding a motorcycle, who passed through the same checkpoint without being arrested, after the assassination was carried out. The incident sparked widespread condemnation from clerics from various sects, who expressed their condemnation of the assassination of Sheikh Shahoud, warning of the repercussions of such operations on the social fabric. They also called for calm, and the opening of an independent and transparent investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable and prevent the recurrence of such violations that herald serious societal disintegration. Sheikh Rasul Shahoud is considered one of the prominent religious figures in Homs, and a member of the “Scientific Body of the Followers of Ahl al-Bayt.” He was known for his role in reviving Shiite religious events, and for his activity in the field of fatwas and spiritual guidance within his local community. The people of Al-Mazraa village expressed their anger over the crime, as they went out in a massive demonstration during which they denounced what they described as “murder based on sectarian identity,” demanding that the circumstances of the crime be revealed and that the perpetrators be held accountable. The protesters chanted slogans denouncing the kidnappings, killings, and displacement targeting religious figures and civilians, in light of what they described as the “absence of accountability.” These developments come in the context of escalating tension in Homs Governorate, which is suffering from a series of killings, kidnappings, and starvation on sectarian grounds, raising fears that the region will slide again into a spiral of violence and division.
