The Governor of Basra, Asaad Al-Eidani, announced that the seawater desalination project, with a capacity of up to one million cubic meters per day, would be transferred to a coalition of the Chinese companies Al Redha Group and PowerChina, which specializes in implementing water infrastructure projects in the region.

In statements followed by Al-Raya, Al-Eidani said, “The strategic seawater desalination project consists of three main axes, including an advanced water desalination plant using reverse osmosis (RO) technology, and a dedicated electricity station to secure the energy needed for the project, in addition to 240 kilometers of transmission lines to deliver water to 9 major distribution points within the governorate.”

He added, “The selected Chinese company has extensive experience and a proven track record in implementing water infrastructure projects in the region, as it has previously implemented more than seven projects, the most prominent of which is the Al Taweelah project in Abu Dhabi with a capacity of 900,000 cubic meters per day, which is considered the largest (RO) station in the world, in addition to the Rabigh project - Phase Three in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with a capacity of 600,000 cubic meters per day, and the Jubail project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia also with the same capacity.”

Al-Eidani pointed out that “the seawater desalination project represents a pivotal step in the development process of Basra Governorate, and is considered a radical solution to the problem of water scarcity that the people of the governorate have suffered from for many years.”

He confirmed the start of the construction work at the project site by the consortium of Al Reda Group and PowerChina companies, marking the launch of the executive phase of the seawater desalination project.
