The Governor of Basra, Asaad Al-Eidani, revealed a noticeable improvement in the water situation within the governorate, stressing that the salinity crisis in the Shatt al-Arab is being addressed with comprehensive strategic plans, in coordination with the federal government and neighboring countries.

A statement followed by Al-Raya stated that Al-Eidani pointed out that Basra has three main water desalination plants operating with a total capacity of more than 250,000 cubic meters per day, in addition to implementing more than 1,600 kilometers of new water networks and equipping 1,070 pumps, as part of an expanded plan to strengthen water infrastructure.

The governor also revealed that a strategic seawater desalination project had been transferred to an Iraqi company in cooperation with one of the largest specialized international companies, indicating that the project would operate with a capacity of one million cubic meters per day, and would include the establishment of conveyor lines extending 240 km, a deep-sea suction station, and a private power generation station, in addition to operational sites in Siba, Shatt al-Arab, and northern Basra.

Al-Eidani stressed that this project will represent the radical solution to the salinity crisis that the governorate has been suffering from for years, pointing to efforts being made to address violations of rivers and lakes, in a way that ensures the stability of water supplies.

He concluded by calling on all parties to give priority to the public interest over personal and political interests to ensure the success of plans and implementation of vital projects
