The Office of the High Commission for Human Rights in Basra announced the filing of complaints related to violations of patients’ rights and neglect of health care. The office explained in a statement followed by Al-Raya that it received a complaint from a citizen about his 13-year-old son being infected with HIV, after undergoing a blood transfusion, as he is a thalassemia patient. The office also called on the Basra Health Department to investigate the death of a second child with the same virus, whose father indicated that she was infected during a blood transfusion months ago without announcing the results of the tests. The office added that it requested the Basra Governorate Council today to open an urgent investigation into the death of a woman in a private hospital as a result of complications from a surgical operation, stressing the necessity of protecting the right to health and ensuring state care for citizens. The office called on the Basra Health Department to conduct rapid and serious investigations to determine the circumstances of these cases, and to work to provide justice to the victims’ families and achieve justice, stressing that the law is above everyone and its enforcement should not be negligent.
