The Parliamentary Electricity and Energy Committee announced the results of its field visit to the Ministry of Electricity, revealing a large gap between current production and expected demand during the summer of 2026.

The committee stated that current production amounts to about 17,000 megawatts, while demand at the peak of summer is expected to reach 60,000 megawatts, which reflects great pressure on the national system.

The committee indicated that the critical circumstances require an immediate contract to import energy from private sector companies in the Kurdistan region, to secure about 2,000 megawatts, in addition to the necessity of contracting to import an additional 900 megawatts to enhance the stability of the network.

It also called for the Council of Ministers to intervene to ensure the continued processing of gas imported from Iran, in light of the absence of any new position on sanctions related to gas imports.

Within the framework of emergency treatments, the committee recommended restarting the barge currently parked in the ports of Basra to meet part of the need during the summer peak period, in addition to supporting private generators by providing free or subsidized fuel for the period extending from June 1 to October 1.

The committee stressed the need to monitor electricity supply prices for citizens, and oblige generator owners to operate hours of no less than 12 hours per day, while establishing strict supervisory controls to ensure adherence to operating times and specified prices, in addition to programming national supply hours in an orderly manner.
